Moving Overseas (BONUS Material)

This Bonus Material exceeded the word length for that article, so we’ve included it for you here. Enjoy!

A great time to upgrade all of your electronics is when you are moving! Most computers, for example, will work in your new home with a simple plug adapter, or a new power cord. But they are also more fragile to move. A Macbook will travel with you nicely, but a 27-inch iMac is a bit more difficult. And a bit more fragile. If picking up a new computer at your new home is an option, it’s much easier to transport a Time Capsule than it is an iMac.

If new computers aren’t an option, factory packaging is nearly always the best way to move such an item.

Moving overseas with firearms is downright difficult. Most other countries have much stricter gun control rules than the United States, so you may not be able to take them with you. And even if your new home will allow you to bring your firearms, chances are your freight forwarder isn’t going to be able to move them for you. You are going to have to find a licensed gun dealer to ship them for you. And only those firearms that are legal in your new home can be shipped. So unless we are talking about family heirlooms, it’s probably easier – and safer – to sell those firearms before moving and treat yourself to something new after you are established in your new home.

If you find that you will be taking firearms with you, you’ll want a sturdy hard case for each firearm that you intend to have shipped.

Moving your pet overseas with you can be a complicated and time-consuming process. And it can be even more stressful for your pet than it is for you. Certificates of health are nearly always required, and quarantine may be necessary.

How will your pet handle the stress of being crated and transported? Will there be a quarantine, and if so, how will your pet handle the additional separation? If this move is temporary, will your pet also have to endure similar stress on the return trip?

You’ll want to research the requirements for your pets travel carefully, and then decide if your pet is going to be able to survive the stress of the move. Sometimes, it’s best to leave your pets with a loved one, no matter how difficult that may seem.
